ARCAM
WHAT IS ARCAM?
Foundation
ARCAM Amsterdam Centre for Architecture was set up as a foundation in 1986 and concentrates its activities in Amsterdam and the surrounding area.
ARCAM aims to reach the largest possible public in order to broaden architecture's appeal and zeros in on topical issues and developments in Amsterdam, so that the discussion about the future is constantly fuelled.
ARCAM also has a function as co-ordination centre and works together with a large number of institutes in order to support and co-ordinate existing programmes and to initiate new activities.

Information point
At ARCAM there is an information point where the public can go for information and where architecture aficionados can be directed to interesting buildings and sites in the city. At ARCAM, the public can consult a large number of architecture books, magazines, folders, sites, maps and a collection of newspaper cuttings. These provide a wealth of information for those who are interested in architecture and urban planning and can help them to find interesting buildings and sites in Amsterdam. Part of the information point is a current affairs bulletin board, with a selection of topical news and developments in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape.

Exhibitions & ARCAM PANORAMA
The exhibition programme is varied and turns the spotlight on architects, buildings, urban developments, architecture abroad and themes relating to architecture. Each year, on average, five exhibitions are organized on topical issues.
The ARCAM PANORAMA is a presentation on Amsterdam architecture from the year 800 untill now.

The information point and the exhibition space are open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 13.00 to 17.00.

Entrance is free.

Amsterdam – a melting pot of cultures from time immemorial – is to a large extent inhabited and designed by individuals with a different cultural background. This exhibition is the result of research into what aspects of their cultures they bring to their Dutch design practice.

ARCAM invites you to take a seat alongside nine architects who at various points in their lives came to the Netherlands in order to practice architecture. Using photographs, impressions, drawings, models and objects, they show architectural projects in which in addition to their training as architects and personal fascinations, their roots have also played a role.
There are numerous questions. What is so Japanese about Blok 65B on IJburg? And what is Portuguese about a water tower? And how does a Swedish architect design a Dutch interior?
This presentation shows that the influence of crossing cultural borders is not so apparent on the surface. Rather it plays a role in the background, in the design process and, for instance, in the handling of the relationship between public and private and the transition between inside and outside. The personal stories bring to light sharp observations of Dutch culture and building practice and are often told with humour and amazement.
Participating architects include: Uri Gilad (Israel), Lada Hršak (Croatia), Sebastian Janusz (Poland), Moriko Kira (Japan), Furkan Köse (Turkey), Felix Madrazo (Mexico) en Arman Akdogan (Turkey), Carina Nilsson (Sweden) and Ana Rocha (Portugal).

THE BUILDING ARCAM is located in the heart of the city, on Prins Hendrikkade. The building has been designed by René van Zuuk and consists of a compact, sculptural structure whose three storeys are interconnected by voids. ARCAM's office is situated on the top storey. At the level of Prins Hendrikkade are the exhibition space and the information point. The lowermost storey, on the water, is used for small-scale discussions, large meetings and for receiving school groups. The elevation on the waterside is entirely of glass. The building is clad with coated aluminium, which has been folded over the roof, right down to the ground. An unusual feature is the sculptural form of the entrance on this side.

A digital photo-report has been made of the construction of the new ARCAM.
