The "Handbook of Environmental and Resource Economics", edited by prof.dr. J.C.J.M. van den Bergh (Regional Economics) was awarded the "Outstanding Academic Title" by the American journal "Choice Magazine" in 2001.

The Royal Shell Prize 2002 was awarded to the environmental economist professor Jeroen van den Bergh. He received the prize for his research in the field of sustainable development, the environment, and natural resources. He was unanimously chosen by the members of the jury and received the amount of 100,000 Euro.
The economics and econometrics research received a positive evaluation at the national research assessment in 2002. Two out of eight programmes were labelled "world class quality".
The department of Spatial Economics received a research grant worth one million Euro in 2002. It is a large EU project called STELLA (Sustainable Transport in Europe and Links and Liaisons with America).
The European Regional Science Association (ERSA) has awarded in 2003 the first European prizes in Regional Science to Professor P. Nijkamp (VU) and Professor J. Paelinck (Erasmus University). The jury's choice is not only a mark of honour to these two scientists, but evidence as well, of the strength of the field of Regional Science in the Netherlands.

In February 2003 Professor Peter Nijkamp received an honorary doctorate from the National Technical University of Athens.

The Regional Science Association International awarded Professor Peter Nijkamp the Founder's Medal on April 15, 2004 in South Africa. Peter Nijkamp - chairman of the NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research - received this prize for his innovative contributions to all fields of regional economics and for his international leadership. The Foudner’s Medal is the highest academic award in the field of regional science and was awarded only 15 times in the 50 years of the existence of the RSAI.

7. Analysis, perspectives and expectations for the research programme
The research group has been performing well over the past 4 years. Many defences of PhD theses have taken place. Numerous publications have appeared in top international journals. The group has also been successful in raising research money. Applications at NWO for research on the “Porter hypothesis” and “Markets for nonrenewables” (personal grant for Withagen to write a monograph; to be published by Princeton University Press) were granted. Also the European Patent Office has provided funding. In the past, the group was very successful in obtaining funding from the NWO-programme on ‘Environment and Economics’. Unfortunately this source is no longer available. Other (NWO) programmes offer perhaps options. Just now (August 2005) a proposal by van den Bergh on evolutionary modelling of common dilemma’s was approved by NWO. In addition, the group has received funding through Bsik programmes, on climate change and insurances, and on evolutionary analysis of transitions. Several other proposals are currently under review (e.g., by NWO). Whereas some of the external funding runs through the university’s Institute for Environmental Studies, the actual projects are undertaken in close cooperation with, and under supervision from, the members of the current research programme.

Finance and Banking (2003-)
Programme Description
The research programme on Finance and Banking deals with aspects of financial decision making for individuals, corporates, and financial institutions and its consequences for the behavior of financial markets. This is elaborated in three lines of research: (1) Financial management and corporate finance; (2) Financial markets; (3) Banking and regulation. All three themes formulated within the programme aim at performing fundamental research that can be translated into practically useful results. The department stimulates this dual objective by recruiting a balanced mix between full-time academics and academic practitioners, thus blending the cutting edge of academic and practitioners insight.

The programme addresses issues on optimal financial management in an Asset/Liability framework. Research questions involve the measurement and modeling of financial risk factors, the communication of risk exposures, and corporate finance issues like optimal governance systems, capital structure determination, and the drivers and effects of merger and acquisition activity. Within a wider context, the programme studies the repercussions of financial management on financial markets. The effectiveness and efficiency of alternative market mechanisms are studied at different levels of aggregation, ranging from the transaction (microstructure issues) to more aggregated level (asset pricing issues). Finally, given its importance, a separate line of research concerns banking and regulation. This part of the programme addresses the effect of recent changes in the regulatory, monetary, and competitive landscape on the banking sector and on central banks. Special attention is devoted to the issue of financial stability because of both its scientific importance and its policy relevance.
