With this letter, I would like to ask your attention for the situation of the community in Bodo, Niger Delta. The lives of these people have been severely affected by the oil spill caused by a breach in a Shell oil pipeline in August 2008.
As a result of the oil spill and a lack of a proper clean up, the land and water on which the community in Bodo depends, remains polluted and unproductive. The damage to fisheries and farming has resulted in food shortages and rising food prices in Bodo and have pushed many people deeper into poverty.
I call on you to monitor the pollution in Bodo and its effects on the local community, to ensure that a clean-up operation takes place and that the affected communities are fully compensated for their losses.
Furthermore, I ask you to publicly commit to transparency and access to information for all aspects of the clean-up and to set up a Commission of Inquiry to investigate and publicly report on Shell’s compliance with environmental legislation and regulations in the Niger Delta.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
